Chilean Wine

With a history that includes conquest by the Spanish 500 years ago, it’s no wonder that the Chilean wine industry is thriving, although it always used to be for domestic palates and the nation was not a key global exporter. All that changed 20–30 years ago with an influx of French master growers when news got out that the central region of Chile, around the western foothills of the Andes, was about as close to perfect wine growing conditions as you could get.

The country is now a major player in the wine industry, hovering around number 5 in the exports by volume charts. We love the red and white wines it produces, and so do the critics. You can get a great bottle for under eight pounds or really splash out on something special from a vintage year. And throughout the range in between, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’ve not experienced the best of Chile, prepared to be mind-blown.
