Merlot Wine

A brilliant single varietal wine as well as a key ingredient in that magical Bordeaux blend, Merlot traces its origins back to the Bordeaux region of France. The grape’s dark blue-black colour is thought to be the inspiration for its name, merle being the French word for blackbird. It’s a grape that enjoys many thousands of hectares devoted to its growth, which now makes it the second most widely cultivated grape in the world, just pipped to the post by Cabernet Sauvignon. It reigns supreme in Bordeaux, particularly the Right Bank areas of St Emilion and Pomerol, but also produces some stunning wines in Italy, USA and Australia, on its own or as an integral part of a blend.

Merlot is appreciated for its smooth, supple texture and plummy fruit, but its character come from the climate in which it is grown. From cooler climes, expect a structured, full-bodied red with dark fruit and possibly hints of tobacco, liquorice and anise. If it’s grown in warmer areas, think cherry, mocha, raspberry and cocoa with a soft, opulent structure.
