Negroamaro Wine

This dark skinned Italian grape is on the up. In Italian it means ‘black and bitter’ and it is grown mainly in Puglia in Southern Italy. It is normally found as a blend with Primitivo (also known as Zinfandel), Malvasia Nera or Montepulciano, however is now also found as a single varietal wine. Due to the heat of Southern Italy, the grape sugars develop well in the Negromaro grape so the ‘bitter’ notes develop as a savoury taste rather than something unpleasant. Negromaro wine is a rich, deeply coloured red with smooth tannins and rich berry flavours, along with notes of spice, liquorice, cloves and cinnamon. A rich lamb dish or spaghetti and meatballs would match perfectly.
