Primitivo

Italy’s name for Zinfandel, this is a dark skinned red grape that produces inky, tannic and high alcohol wines with flavours of ripe strawberry or raspberry. Primitivo means ‘the early one’ which refers to the grape’s capacity for early ripening. Primitivo is grown in America where it is used to make both a ‘white’ Zinfandel (actually a rosé) as well as powerful, heady reds. The rosé is ideal for drinking on its own whereas the reds are great with strong flavours such as pasta with parmesan or barbecued meats.
