Top value Spanish red wine, using grapes from old Garnacha (Grenache) vines. It's unoaked, the winemakers preferring to let the perfectly ripened fruit shine through instead. This red has been one of our bestselling wines since we started importing it, earning thousands of fans. Highly recommended red.

1415 refers to the year in which the wines of Cariñena first received their royal seal of approval from the King of Spain. Today the region is perhaps dwarfed in stature by its better-known neighbours Rioja and Priorat yet represents brilliant value for money. The 1415 is made by Marcelo Morales Calderon who has worked with Chilean wineries such as Carmen. Made from 100% Garnacha grapes from 40-year-old vines which give very concentrated flavours, this is supple and aromatic with notes strawberries and cherries that are mirrored on the palate.

I don't usually look beyond Tempranillo and Rioja when it comes to Spanish reds but this wine made for a very pleasant change Steve

The Producer

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"From Cariñena, made by Marcelo Morales Calderon who worked for many years in Chile, including at Vina Carmen. Made from 40-year-old Garnacha, it's a plummy and juicy red, a nice little lift of white pepper and spice, then lots of savoury, meaty notes mingling with the bold fruitiness to give this broad mid-week appeal: chilli con carne, spaghetti Bolognese, meat- or nutloaf would all work a treat."

The Region

The co-operative has numerous vineyards with different microclimates and altitudes ranging from 320 to 850 metres above sea level. The continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers, is mitigated by a beneficial cool and dry wind, the Cierzo, which blows through the vineyards all year long and ensures the grapes are unaffected by mould or rot. Due to the altitude, age of vines and large diurnal variation, the wines have good intensity and achieve ripeness while retaining their acidity.
