Made at the Willunga 100 winery, this Shiraz benefits from the winemaking expertise of Willunga's Tim James. A small proportion of the wine went in to French oak for ageing, adding complexity and richness but the pure Shiraz fruit flavours are much in evidence, with flavours of ripe red plums, complemented by a dash of cracked black pepper.

The Producer

The 16 Stops wines are made at the Willunga 100 winery under the watchful eye of consultant winemaker Tim James, with much of the fruit sourced from the same vineyards. The wines blend the fruit from the McLaren Vale with that of the Adelaide Hills to combine the best of both areas, with riper flavours from the McLaren Vale, and fresh, mineral notes from the Adelaide Hills.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"A robust and chunky Shiraz from the vineyards of Willunga winery in McLaren Vale, just outside Adelaide. A proportion was aged in French oak and that gives a nice touch of cedar and smokiness on the nose, but it's more about bold, confident black fruit and a wisp of freshly-cracked pepper. In the mouth there's a big, rumbling layer of tannin on which sits some of that pleasing oak-toast quality and good fruit, sweet and ripe but with a savoury edge. It's the sort of straightforward, big-hearted red that makes a good burger or barbecue go down rather nice"

The Region

The McLaren Vale wine region is situated due south of Adelaide, sheltered by a range of hills to the south, and in close proximity to the sea to the west. The climate is soft and warm, with low rainfall and gentle transition from season to season. This is classic red wine country, with dry, full bodied reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in particular faring well.

Slow Cooker Beef Brisket

A super-simple one pot recipe using a flavoursome cut of brisket. Try with a fruity, medium-bodied red like the 16 Stops Shiraz to contrast nicely with the meaty, savoury sauce.

Gnocchi with Sausage & Tomatoes

Potato or pasta? May you never have to make that decision again thanks to the Italians! Gnocchi is the perfect middle man, especially this tomato delight paired with a medium bodied, fruity red. We'd recommend new world Shiraz.

Duck Breast with Wild Mushrooms and Cream

The rich, fatty flavours of duck, combined with creamy mushrooms call for a soft, smooth red with fresh fruit flavours. Head to light or medium-bodied reds - fruity Shiraz, Grenache or Pinotage pair well, especially McLaren Vale Shiraz.
