This 100% Malbec is produced from the Agostino estate vineyards in the Maipu region. Winemaker Jose Pedro Gomez ages 40% of the wine in oak for 6 months to round out the tannins. It's full of pepper and spice, with plenty of bramble fruit and a touch of toasty oak. A well-balanced, classy drop with creamy dark fruit and sweet spice, it knocks spots off the competition, if we do say so ourselves. Pair with rare steak or spicy lamb.

The Producer

Finca Agostino is the story of four brothers: Vincenzo, Rosalia, Sebastian and Miguel Agostino, who lived their childhood in Mendoza before settling with their family in Canada in the sixties. The memory of Mendoza remained in their minds as the land of their childhood; a period of their lives shared with their grandfather Sebastiano. The estate farms vineyards in the Maipu and Uco Valleys, working in their own vineyards and with contract growers to produce their excellent wines.

"With only 40% of the wine aged in oak for six months, and a surprisingly low 12.5% alcohol, this is clearly a Malbec made to show off freshness and the variety’s innate aromatics, which it does: violet and kirsch perfume lays over typical plum and chocolate, before a palate there is no lack of supple, creamy-textured and smooth ripeness, sweet black fruits edged with bittersweet cocoa, lovely silky tannins and a refined, juicy acidity to give length. An understated style in some ways, but that’s what makes it so damned drinkable"

The Region

Mendoza is the country's largest wine province, producing over 80% of Argentina's total wine production. The Agostino vineyards are situated in Barrancas in the Maipu region, just south east of the city of Mendoza. Barrancas has alluvial stony soils as the Mendoza river used to run over the same ground. The vineyards sit at 850 metres above sea level, with the Uco Valley vineyards situated at over 1,100 m above sea level, with large day to night temperature fluctuations, making for wines with freshness and depth.

Blackened Steak with Red Wine Jus

A simple rump steak calls for a full-bodied red to square up to the dense structure of the meat. Head to rich, structured Medoza Malbecs with some oak ageing to give a touch of spice.

Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

This robust, flavoursome cut is nicely balanced by the punchy, herby sauce. Skirt needs a relatively well-structured red to soften the meat flavours, so plump for oaky Malbec or Cabernet but remember not to go too full-bodied or risk drowning out the green sauce. The Inicio Malbec will work very well.

Polenta Chips with Gorgonzola Dressing

A twist on the usual cheese board offering - this recipe combines more-ish fried polenta chips with a rich, creamy blue cheese sauce. Pair the salty Gorgonzola with a full, fruity red to contrast with the salty tang. The ripe bramble and plummy notes of the Inicio will work wonders with this dish.
