An Austrian Riesling wine with serious 'wow' factor. Allram always knew the part of the Gaisberg hill called 'Zöbinger Gaisberg' was the coolest, making for some of their best Riesling wines. With 2016 being a standout vintage (as James Suckling said, 'The Danube is white hot in 2016'), perhaps it's not surprising Allram have produced a zinger of a wine.

There's a distinctive hint of peaches and apricot on the nose, a powerful, juicy palate, full of yellow fruit flavours and beautifully balanced sweetness and acidity. Perfect with crab, lobster, shellfish, or you could try it with lightly-spiced Asian-influenced dishes.

Alternatively, you could simply enjoy a glass of one of Austria's best Riesling wines, complete in the knowledge it's swept all competition to one side this vintage.

Stunning Austrian Riesling wine that took the Austrian White Trophy at the 2018 International Wine Challenge. And then went on to be crowned IWC Champion White Wine 2018. Quite an achievement for 28-year-old Lorenz Haas-Allram, who's been making the estate's wines for only the past three years. 97pts IWC

The Producer

The Allram wine estate lies in the middle of Kamptal. Michaela Haas-Allram took over the running of the family wine business in 1992, helped by her husband, Erich Haas. Their son Lorenz has been winemaker for three years, and daughter Magdelana guides the creative side of the winery.

With three generations active at Allram (Michaela's father Walter is still regularly out amongst his precious vines), there's a wealth of accumulated knowledge to exploit. Focusing on Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Grauburgunder, and Chardonnay, Allram have picked up many awards over the years for their wines. Taking the coveted Champion White Wine Trophy at the 2018 IWC must rank as their most impressive result to date.

Winemaking

How is it that making a great Riesling wine is apparently so simple? Look at every top wine, and it seems that it's as simple as picking the grapes, letting them ferment into wine, and popping into a bottle.

Of course, appearances can be deceptive. There's finding the very best sites for Riesling to thrive, knowing how to tend the vines to produce top quality fruit, and, of course, when's right to pick.

Hand-harvested, the Allram Riesling was macerated on its skins, then fermented using natural yeasts and given five months lees contact (letting those 'bits' in the wine impart more flavour and aromas). So, you see, simple. And a sublime wine too.

The Region

Allram put the success of their Riesling Gaisberg down to the unique soils of the vineyard. Facing south towards the Rivers Kamp and Danube, the Gaisberg hill has terraced vineyards planted on Gföhler gneiss. This poor soil is in turn over schist rock, with vertical cracks helping drainage and giving the vines' roots a mineral-rich anchor.

It's one of Allram's three Erste Lage sites, Austria's equivalent to premier cru vineyards. 52 of these Erste Lage were announced in 2010, and only Grüner Veltliner and Riesling can carry the coveted logo on their labels.

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Old World Riesling or Southern French rosés with good weight of fruit.

Salad Nicoise

Try a light, fresh white with this classic salad - the tuna works well with crisp, easy-drinking, fruity styles such as Sauvignon Blanc or an off-dry Riesling.

Fusion Prawn And Vegetable Curry

The fragrance and flavours of coconut, chilli and ginger hold their own and can only be complemented by a fruity Riesling. This Allram Riesling is a glorious companion to Asian-fusion cuisine.
