The family-run Fabiano winery produce this stunning Amarone made by winemaker Massimo Mameli, an utterly unique style made from partially dried red grapes which concentrates the flavour and colour of the wine. The nose has aromas of ripe cherry, blueberry and spicy nuances while the palate has very soft, powdery tannins accompanied by a sustained acidity that gives way to hints of plum and cocoa.

The Producer

For over 100 years the Fabiano family have been growing, producing and selling wines from the Veneto region in north east Italy. They began with a wine shop in Venice and by the late sixties were producing their own wine from an estate between Verona and Lake Garda. The winery is now run by the fourth generation, brothers Alessandro and Michele Fabiano, under the watchful eye of their father Nicola.

The Winemaker

Massimo Mameli is the winemaker, producing the estate's signature Valpolicella blends including the famous Amarone, made from grapes which have been dried on straw mats before being pressed and fermented.

The Region

The Veneto region, with it's unique position between the Alpine foothills and the Adriatic sea produces a dizzying array of styles, from sparkling whites to sweet reds, not to mention the ancient tradition of drying grapes. The grapes of the Valpolicella region, Corvina and Rondinella, are grown on steep slopes with limestone soils, rich in structure. They are trellised on Veronese pergolas raised in terraces bordered by stone walls and all the grapes were harvested by hand.

A simple rump steak calls for a full-bodied red to square up to the dense structure of the meat. Head to rich, structured reds with some oak ageing to give a touch of spice and an Amarone from Valpolicella is exactly that.
