Take a top New Zealand winemaker, plonk him in the vineyards of France's sunny Languedoc region, and let him loose with the top-notch grapes growing all around, and you'll end up with a cracking Syrah red wine.

At least that's how the Baron de Badassière Syrah has turned out, thanks to Graeme Paul's hard work. 100% Syrah (aka Shiraz), with no oak; just pure, unadulterated, juicy red wine.

All the spiciness on the nose you'd expect, with a rich, smooth palate. When it comes to deliciousness in red wines, this takes some beating. The perfect red wine to show why the Languedoc is one of France's best value wine regions.

‘A lick of spice initially to the black cherry fruit and integrated wood notes...You can almost see the wine lying on a sun lounger and taking in the rays, and starting its day with a Gitane and a café noir.’

The Winemaker

New Zealander Graeme Paul, director Joel Julienne and consultant winemaker Matt Thomson combine forces at the Cave de Pomerols cooperative to produce a wide variety of styles from across the Languedoc region.

The Region

The region benefits from a sunny warm climate which encourages ripe, fruity flavours in the wines, while the coastal breezes help retain freshness and aromatics. The grapes come from selected vineyards around the Etang de Thau and Picpoul area and the vines are planted on sandy Pliocene soils with harvesting achieved both by hand and machine.

Roast Lamb with Herb Butter

A simple roast lamb is a classic match for Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Try the Baron de Badassière Syrah, it's a delight.

Feijoada

A robust, gutsy Portuguese pork stew that's not for the faint-hearted, this needs a full, ripe red wine to stand up to the porky flavours. Try spicy Shiraz or Syrah styles. Baron de Badassière make a brilliant Syrah, we'd recommend you try that.

Gnocchi with Sausage & Tomatoes

Potato or pasta? May you never have to make that decision again thanks to the Italians! Gnocchi is the perfect middle man, especially this tomato delight paired with a medium bodied red such as a Pays d’Oc Syrah.
