Six of the Best French Wine Blends

Classic French wines where one plus one means more than two. Taking two or more grape varieties, getting the balance between them just right is no mean feat.

The end results, though, speak volumes to the reason for blending in the first place. So much more going on, both aroma-wise, and on your tongue.

Often the most food-friendly of all wines, these blends take wine drinking up a notch. By all means, stick to your favourite varietals (wines made with one grape type), but every now and again, it pays to take your tastebuds on an adventure.

The success of the estate has very much relied on the women of the family, with Berthe Abet in charge of the domaine for six decades and through two world wars. The Producer

An estate of 68ha in the heart of the large Corbières region, with vineyards planted on stony soil. The grape varieties planted focus on the red, unsurprisingly given 95% of the region’s wines are red.

Recently a member of Domaines Paul Mas, that ownership has seen plenty of new investment, with the cellar completely overhauled in 2014. Now gravity moves the juice and wine around, not pumps, and focused winemaking producers red wines that really show what Corbières can produce.

Even the barrels are a bit different here, using 50hl conical barrels rather than the traditional style you’d recognise.

We’ve shipped direct to keep the price down, and think you’ll love this classic French regional producer’s wine.

The Producer

A historical Rhône estate since 1834 when Antoine Jaboulet began buying and farming the land around the town of Tain l’Hermitage, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has grown into one of the best known and most admired names in the Rhône Valley, synonymous with a broad range of top quality Rhône Cru and benchmark generic appellations. Six generations of the Jaboulet family carried on this family tradition, purchasing some of what would become the most prized vineyard locations in the region. Following nearly two centuries of family ownership, Maison Paul Jaboulet was bought in 2006 by the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux.

so smooth

I enjoyed my first case from Rude. The case was damaged in transit, but was replaced immediately. My favourite wine is :

Rude Reserve Rouge 2016, Languedoc

Lovely and smooth to drink.

Definitely a favorite

We have tried this wine a few times now as part of mixed cases, and it's become our go-to favourite. It has never disappointed, with food or on its own. Smooth, with just the right amount of fruitiness - neither overpowering nor too delicate - and every sip transports us from dreary weather to memories of summer and warm, delicious locations. We love it!!
