If you thought red wines would be where Portugal's strengths lay, you'd be bang on the nail. You can't help but be impressed by Portuguese wines like Escada Touriga Nacional, taking native grape varieties and turning them into unique red wines. Once you've tried the Alta Corte, you'll be totally convinced of Portugal's ability with table wines.

It's the exceptional flavour coupled with the outstanding value that knocks your socks off.

Let's not forget the white wines of Portugal though. They're renowned for combining alluring aromas with ripe fruit flavours, and these certainly don't disappoint.

So what's so special about wines from Portugal? Think amazing quality at remarkably low prices. Aside from producing one of the world's top fortified wines, Port, the country has a great range of white and red wines to offer the canny and adventurous wine drinker. Many made from local grape varieties, it's rich hunting ground for top value wines

Alta Corte 2016, Lisboa

Top 10 Best-Selling Red Wine

A blend of the rare Caladoc grape with Tinta Roriz, this wine is all juicy fruit. Yes, a light sense of structure gives the wine shape, but the bold berry fruits give it a refreshing, ready-to-drink character. Enjoy now. Wine Enthusiast 87 pts

The Producer

Founded by wine-making legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Portuguese Salt Cod

The robust flavour of salt cod with spicy piri piri can stand up to a red wine, so no need to match this white fish with a white wine on this occasion - try a fruity, balanced red with soft tannins to stand up to the rich fish and vibrant seasoning. Try the Paxis Red it's a great match. Full recipe

Roast Pheasant with Lemon & Rosemary

Contrast the delicate savoury flavours in this dish with a medium-bodied red with good fruit intensity. You don’t want to go for overly tannic styles which will overpower the meat so stick to soft, supple styles such our Portuguese Escada. Full recipe

Pair Thai dishes with fresh, light whites from aromatic grape varieties, just like those in the Portada White, which contrast well with the aromatic herbs and heat. Full recipe

Vila Regia 2016, Douro

Be amazed at how such a jam-packed-with-flavour wine can just be 12.5% alcohol. Thanks to grapes ripened in the idyllic Douro Valley, and the magic touch of top winemaker Luís Sottomayor. Portuguese wine that gives astounding value for money

The Producer

World-class winemaker Luís Sottomayor first produced Douro Valley's Vila Regina in 1989, long before table wines were being made in the fortified production dominated valley.

The grapes are selected from choice vineyards in the upper Douro and majority are found at altitude.
Luís Sottomayor's aim is to produce bright, lively wines for youthful drinking, quite the opposite to the fortified age-worthy numbers he produces at Sandemans and Casa Ferreirinha.

Feijoada

A robust, flavoursome Portuguese pork stew that's not for the faint-hearted, this needs a full, ripe red wine to stand up to the porky flavours. Try this rich Port variety blend from the Douro as a lovely food match. Full recipe

Top Wine

I've had this wine in three cases and I have to say it comes out top every time. A smooth red that I love drinking on its own or with a light snack.

By Jermaine on 13th February 2019

Excellent, easy-drinking wine at an excellent price

Medium bodied wine with an initial hint of cherries and other fruit flavours, followed by a discernible vanilla finish, though I could not detect the promised fig flavours. Lighter alcohol content (ideal for mid-week) and good value for a very drinkable wine, with or without food accompaniment.

By Mike on 16th January 2019

Best wine I've had for ages

Got this in a mixed case, they were all good with this the standout best! I will be ordering more,it goes with most food, also delicious on its own, just lovely.

Well balanced

Lovely juicy, drinkable wine with date/fig on the nose and palate.
A reasonably priced wine that punches well above its weight.

Easy on the palate

This is a favourite in our house - a wonderful, easy to drink, every day wine delicious with or without food.
The winemakers description says it all really but this is a must have for the fridge as summer approaches to have an inexpensive but very acceptable wine to offer to friends who may drop in unexpectedly - thats if there is any left in your fridge by the time they appear.
