If classic white Burgundy appeals, then Montagny's premier cru wines offer excellent value. That's not to say 'cheap', because, frankly, the best Chardonnay wines in the world are never going to be that. But, for special occasions, or a meal to truly remember, these are wines with massive appeal.

Shimmering gold and green hues, hints of vanilla, brioche, and oak on the enticing nose, and a wonderfully round, richly-flavoured palate that lingers on the tongue. Its slow fermentation in the finest French oak barrels gives Montagny's Chardonnay a classiness that's unrivalled. The sort of wine that'll make a fine fish, seafood, or poultry meal very special indeed.

Vines have been producing grapes for wine here since Roman times. Once known as the Côte de Buxy, the 300 hectares surrounding the village of Buxy are solely dedicated to making some of Burgundy's best value Chardonnay wines

The Producer

The Bichot family settled in the Chateau of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, Burgundy in 1350. The family’s coat of arms has not changed since nor has its symbol, a doe, or biche in French. Their wine heritage started in 1831 with Bernard who was a wine trader. It was his son, Hippolyte, who brought the first vines in Volnay and grandson, Albert, who rooted the Bichot name in Beaune from which the family business escalated. Since 1996 Bichot has been under Albéric Bichot who is completely focused on developing the future of the company without compromising family tradition or quality.

The Winemaker

The winemakers of Albert Bichot are world renowned. They were awarded 'Red Winemaker of the Year' in 2004 and 'White Winemaker of the Year' 2011. The team have recently been awarded the title of 'Red Winemaker of the Year' 2017 at the International Wine Challenge 2017. This new recognition rewards their teams’ daily efforts and the continuous attention paid to every detail from vine to finished wine and uncompromising choices in terms of quality.

The Region

The Côte Chalonnaise is situated just south of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy with hillside vineyards on limestone soils. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are still the grapes of choice. The Cru are less well-known than those in the Côte d'Or but names such as Montagny, Mercurey and Rully are gaining a reputation as good value Premier Cru sites. At the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, the vineyards for this appellation form a vast amphitheatre on the slopes that stretch across 4 villages including that of Montagny-lès-Buxy. This 301-hectare appellation is exclusively devoted to growing Chardonnay grapes. The wines tend to be riper than their more northern Burgundian counterparts, thanks to the slightly warmer climate and some south-facing vineyards.

Chilean Fish Stew

Pair rich fish stews with vibrant, zesty whites such as Sauvignon Blanc or Burgundian Chardonnay which have enough fruit flavour to balance out the punchy garlic, herbs and tomatoes.

Chicken Paupiette filled with Sundried Tomato and Mushrooms

The multi-layered flavours of savoury mushroom, sweet, sun-dried tomato and rich aubergine and pepper calls for a bit of an all-rounder. A soft, easy-drinking red will cover all the required taste bases, as will a generous oaked white such as our Montagny 1er Cru from Albert Bichot

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Southern French rosés or an Albert Bichot Chardonnay from Burgundy with good weight of fruit.
