Yes, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is the big success story, but there other excellent wine regions too. And, they often offer tremendous value, something we were keen to find in the land of the long white cloud.

Made by Waimea Estates, this Kiwi Sauvignon comes from Nelson, not far from Marlborough, but with a climate that's subtly different from its more famous neighbour. It's a cracking white wine, full of those much-loved flavours of passion fruit and gooseberry, and the unmistakable aromas of freshly-cut summer grass.

There can't be a wine drinker in the country who hasn't at least tried a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. But try Nelson's and you'll be on to a new-found favourite.

Top 10 Best-Selling White Wine
Nestled in Tasman Bay, the Nelson wine region isn't as familiar as Marlborough, just to the east. But just take a sip of this crisp, refreshing, Sauvignon wine, and you'll see why it's worth sometimes trying something different

The Producer

Owned by Trevor and Robyn Bolitho, Waimea Estates started out life as a horticultural operation, but the couple soon saw the potential in the local area for the production of quality wines. Their wine adventure began with the planting of vineyard sites in1993-1995, resulting in an award for their first Sauvignon Blanc vintage in 1997. Sustainable farming is at the forefront of their philosophy, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and an emphasis on the health and wellbeing of the surrounding environment.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Here’s a very nice expression of New Zealand Sauvignon, not from Marlborough but from nearby Nelson, a small and prestigious region perhaps best known for Chardonnay. This has pea pod and gooseberry typicity, but it has a tangy, vibrant and orangey fruit quality too, flowing onto the palate with that zesty citrus to the fore, hints of more tropical fruit flit around the margins, while the grassy punch that only Kiwi Sauvignon can deliver is there. This is dry in the finish and nicely done I must say."

The Region

Found at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the coastal region of Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest region and well-sheltered from strong winds by the surrounding mountain ranges. It offers an ideal climate for grape growing, testified by two-hundred years of fruit farming in the area, but the wine industry only really took hold in the 1970s. The focus is firmly on quality over quantity, with mostly family-run wineries producing just 2% of the total wine production of New Zealand. You’ll find Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir ever-present, along with crisp Chardonnays and aromatics such as Riesling and Pinot Gris.

Pea And Goats Cheese Risotto

Risottos pair well with both reds and whites so consider the other ingredients when choosing a wine match - the combination of sweet peas and salty goats cheese call for a vibrant white with lots of fruit flavour - try northern Italian whites or aromatic New Sealand whites such a Sauvignon blanc.

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Southern French rosés with good weight of fruit or a new world Sauvignon Blanc like Bolitho's Block from Nelson.
