Amazingly, the first vines were only planted in the mid-'70's in Marlborough. Now this wild and beautiful landscape is the source of New Zealand's biggest wine success story - Sauvignon Blanc.

A tidal wave of white wines with gooseberry, citrus, and passionfruit as their trademark characteristics have been flooding out from Marlborough ever since.

We just can't seem to get enough of the taste sensation, so much so we're prepared to spend that little bit extra too. You'll be pleasantly surprised that you've found a tip-top Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for well under a tenner.

Able to tantalise the taste buds at any time of the year, Bolitho's Block effortlessly works with or without food, with friends or as a stimulating glass by itself.

The Producer

Owned by Trevor and Robyn Bolitho, Waimea Estates started out life as a horticultural operation, but the couple soon saw the potential in the local area for the production of quality wines. Their wine adventure began with the planting of vineyard sites in the early nineties, resulting in an award for their first Sauvignon Blanc vintage in 1997. Sustainable farming is at the forefront of their philosophy, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery and an emphasis on the health and wellbeing of the surrounding environment.

The Winemaker

Hamish Kempthorne heads the winemaking team at Waimea Estates having created wines for over fifteen years across Australia and New Zealand's premium cool climate winemaking regions. His aim with Sauvignon Blanc is to capture the intense aromatics whilst keeping the ripe, delicate structure of the wines. He's done a pretty good job so far.

The Region

Given its a relative newcomer to making wines, New Zealand is blessed with some exceptional wine regions. Most famous of all is undoubtedly Marlborough, forever linked to the runaway Kiwi wine success: Sauvignon Blanc.

This strikingly beautiful wine region is found at the northeastern tip of the south island. Whilst it's Sauvignon that's by far and away the top variety here, Chardonnay, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and Pinot Noir are all making some of the best New Zealand wines you'll ever taste.

Citrus Fresh

I dream Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Gavi but this very citrus tasting Sauvignon Blanc went down nicely with some extra mature Cheddar.

Pea And Goats Cheese Risotto

Risottos pair well with both reds and whites so consider the other ingredients when choosing a wine match - the combination of sweet peas and salty goats cheese call for a vibrant white with lots of fruit flavour - try northern Italian whites or aromatic New Sealand whites such a Sauvignon Blanc.

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Southern French rosés with good weight of fruit or a new world Sauvignon Blanc like Bolitho's Block from Nelson.
