It helps when you use the top Sicilian red grape varieties in your wine, but the extra dimension to this wine comes in the form of top Italian winemaker Alberto Antononi.

One of the country's top wine consultants, he's turned this great all-rounder into something extra special. With its attractive berry aromas, plush cherry flavours, and a hint of spice, it's remarkably versatile.

Quality meets value in a very smart Italian wine. Well worth keeping a few in your wine rack.

The Producer

The Borgo Selene wines are made at the Curatolo family winery. For more than 135 years the family’s enthusiasm, passion and commitment to making fine wines have led to some of Sicily's best wines. In the late 1970s, the Curatolo Family added still wines to their range of Marsala, made only from local Sicilian grape varieties, which express the unique character and flavours of the Sicilian terroir.

The Winemaker

Antonino Reina or 'Nino', was raised in a family of winemakers, Nino began his wine career at 21. Before joining the Curatolo Arini team he worked for the likes of Rallo Sicilia and Marzotto. He loves to travel but is always lured back to the place he calls home, a place as colourful and perfumed as his wine. Nino is aided by the considerable experience and skills of Alberto Antononi.

The Region

The white grape vineyards are located on the western side of Sicily, slightly inland from Marsala, the reds more central and at approximately 500m about sea level. They're planted to ensure consistent harvest, encourage even ripening and typical flavour characteristics.

Pasta Puttanesca

This Italian classic can handle a big and fruity red or white – the acidity of the tomatoes and salty anchovy balance rich, juicy reds. Try the Borgo Selene blend of Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese for starters.

Frikkadels: South African Meatballs

South African spiced meatballs are an easy pairing for red wines - the beef and pork combination will suit most medium-bodied reds but head for Merlot blends or southern Italians for the right combination of soft fruit and structure. The Borgo Selene is a great place to start.

Mushroom Risotto with Caramelised Onions

The wholesome, rich and earthy flavours of mushroom risotto pair perfectly aged and oaked reds. As this risotto is baked it gives you the perfect opportunity to crack open a bottle of your favourite Borgo Selene and let it breathe before serving.
