Briar Ridge has three main blocks of Chardonnay in the Hunter Valley, each with different aspects so giving slightly different twists to the grapes' aromas and flavours. Only 30% is aged in oak, with the rest going into stainless steel tanks to harness the fresh, primary fruit nature of top Chardonnay.

Ripe peach and melon flavours mingle with a hint of vanilla and spice, coupled seamlessly with that refreshing nectarine acidity Chardonnay's famous for.

The Producer

Briar Ridge Wines was founded in 1972, in the Mount View area of the Hunter Valley wine region. A premium Australian area, Briar Ridge specialises in Shiraz and Semillon, the two grape varieties that truly excel there. Rated as a five-red-star winery by leading Australian wine critic, James Halliday, makes Briar Ridge part of the elite group of Aussie wineries to be so highly rated.

Outside the Hunter, they've also vineyards in Orange, Wrattonbully, and Coonawarra. As with many wineries in the Hunter, this gives them access to fruit from a range of climates, and so produce consistently good wines year after year.

The Winemaker

Winemaking at Briar Ridge has been headed up by Gwyn Olsen since 2013. One of Australia's young rising star winemakers, Gwyn studied at the University of Otago, New Zealand, as well as top Australian wine school, Roseworthy.

As with many top Australian winemakers, she hasn't stayed put, with vintages in France's Languedoc, St-Emilion, and Burgundy, as well as a stint as Assistant Winemaker for Villa Maria in New Zealand. Owned by John Davis, who made his fortune in the oil industry in Western Australia, Gwyn isn't short of access to the resources she needs to craft some of the Hunter Valley's best wines.

The Region

The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region, with the first vines planted back in the early 1820's. By 1840, thanks to the arrival back in Australia of James Busby with his extensive vine cutting collection from Europe, the Hunter had over 500 acres of vineyards.

Some of Australia's greatest names started out here: Tyrell, Tulloch, Lindeman. Today over 150 wineries make wines that are some of Australia's most distinctive. Semillon like nowhere else on the planet, and Shiraz that's the antithesis of the big, bold Australian style. In the Hunter Valley it's much more savoury, medium-bodied, and can age for decades.
