Made by the family-owned Bodegas Navajas in the heart of the Rioja region, this is a blend of 95% Tempranillo (Rioja’s predominant varietal) with 5% Mazuelo grapes and aged in oak for 12 months. This is a benchmark, classic (yet modern) Rioja, with lovely strawberry and cherry fruit flavours and a silky smooth texture. This wine just goes to show why Rioja is still one of our best-loved imports. A great match for a hearty stew or with grilled red meats or tomato-based dishes.

The Producer

Bodegas Navajas is a family run winery situated in the village of Navarrete, in the heart of the Rioja region. The bodega was founded in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1983 when the Navajas family finally took complete control of the winery which has seen a dramatic improvement in quality ever since. The Bodega is run by Antonio Navajas and his wife, Rosa Maria Gandarias. Their son, Roberto, is responsible for production and quality control and their daughter, Mercedes, is in charge of exports.

"The ‘Joven’ designation refers to Rioja wines that have not spent as much time in oak as a Reserva or Gran Reserva for example, in this case the 95% Tempranillo/5% Mazuelo blend aged in oak for 12 months. That gives a lovely depth of espresso and chocolate to this ripe, fruit-filled wine that is very much modern Rioja, deep and succulent, sweet-fruited and plush. It’s a wine of considerable depth, the creaminess of the tannins, plenty of vanilla-sweet oak and a juicy acidity long and balanced in the spicy finish."

The Region

The Rioja region is in north eastern of Spain, located south of the Cantabrian Mountains, which help to isolate the region from the fierce winds and maritime influences. Most of Rioja’s wines are red made predominantly from the Tempranillo grape. The region has three districts: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. Rioja Alta is Rioja’s fullest in terms of fruit and concentration with lovely velvety smooth tastes. Reds are made predominantly from Tempranillo and Garnacha with Graciano and Carinena playing bit parts.
