'An ode to elegance and complexity' is how consultant winemaker Grant Phelps describes the Syrah Gran Reserva, a Best In Show Trophy Winner at the Wines of Chile Awards in 2014. Made by award-winning winery Casas del Bosque, this is full-bodied with lovely aromas of black cherries and chocolate and a slight oakiness, thanks to 12 months in oak before bottling. The palate is smooth and textured with juicy, black fruit and a long, long finish.

Its big its black its BOOM it's like munching on a box of dark chocolate, flavour-packed, smooth with a hint of spice. Worth every penny. Capitarno

The Producer

Family owned winery Casas del Bosque was founded in 1993 by Juan Cuneo Solari. The son of an Italian immigrant, he had always dreamed of having his own vineyard and chanced upon an area of the Casablanca Valley, 100k due west of Santiago, with its pine forests, olive groves and small, white abandoned adobe houses. He chose to name the winery Casas del Bosque, or “Houses of the Forest.” The winemaking team are evangelical about translating the character of the vineyard and grape in to the final wine, using longer than average skin contact to extract extra flavour from the grapes. Some vineyards are under organic management and the winery is currently beginning the process towards Wines of Chile Sustainability Certification, which is the first step on the way to organic certification.

Winemaking

The winemaking team at Casas del Bosque work with consultant winemaker Grant Phelps. Grant arrived at the winery in 2010 although his winemaking experience in Chile stretches back over 14 years. Making wine since the age of 20, following a MSc in Viticulture and Oenology (he claims to have been breast-fed Sauvignon Blanc), Grant has worked his way through much of the winemaking world, including stints in his homeland of New Zealand, Australia, France and California.

The Region

Chile’s winemaking history goes back over 460 years, despite a relatively recent introduction to UK wine drinkers thanks to reliable, well priced wines from recognisable grape varieties. Sandwiched between the Pacific and the Andes, its dry, warm climate enjoys high temperatures which are moderated by the cooling effects of these two great forces of nature. The Casablanca Valley is a real deal ‘cool-climate’ region, a current buzz word among wine lovers which to denote a (generally) New World wine region enjoys a more European style and climate.

Polenta Chips with Gorgonzola Dressing

A twist on the usual cheese board offering - this recipe combines more-ish fried polenta chips with a rich, creamy blue cheese sauce. Pair the salty Gorgonzola with a lush, sweet white for the perfect contrast of flavours, or a dark-fruited, ripe New World red.
