Cassagnau's owner, Jacques Abet, has done remarkable things with the family wine estate. Given his day job as the local doctor, that's some feat.

His curiosity and enthusiasm for wine shows in the wide range of grape varieties grown, unusual even for the Languedoc. Here he's turned his hand to Pinot Noir and has managed to come up with a wine to be proud of.

Lovely purple colour, with cherries and spice on the nose. Its silky palate carries hints of violets, fresh and, for a red wine, refreshing. This gives you a Pinot Noir wine that is so affordable to fall into the 'everyday' bracket. However, the quality easily puts it into that special 'worth twice the price' bracket.

The Languedoc just might be the top candidate for giving its vignerons the most freedom in all of France. Sure, you'll find superb Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah red wines. But you'll also find grape varieties more usually associated with other regions. Like this exceptional value Pinot Noir. A top recommendation for you.

The Producer

Family-owned Domaine de Cassagnau is situated in the heart of the Languedoc region, due south of Carcasonne. The success of the estate has very much relied on the women of the family, with Berthe Abet in charge of the Domaine for six decades and through two world wars. A doctor by profession, Jacques inherited the estate from his mother, Berthe's daughter Jacqueline, and continues the family business with wife Collette.

The Winemaker

Owner Jacques Abet manages to combine his doctor's profession with that of running a wine estate and swaps white coat for tractor whenever the vines call. He also oversees the winemaking process and his renovation of the estate allowed him to carefully choose specific grape varieties for the varied vineyard plots on the estate.

The Region

The estate produces red, white and rose styles within the Limoux area in the foothills of the Pyrenees and the warm, sunny Mediterranean climate also benefits from the fresher Atlantic breezes that work their way inland. The choice of grapes varieties is a meeting of these dual elements, with Syrah and Grenache representing the Languedoc and Cabernet and Merlot on the Atlantic side.
