Hailing from the Riverina and Barossa Valley in South East Australia, this wine was stored on French oak staves and allowed to mature prior to bottling for a smooth, spiced flavour. Blackcurrant, stewed plum and lingering vanilla with a hit of spice make this a great-value Aussie wine you can drink solo, or with full-flavoured food.

Buy this if...you love aromatic, rich reds.

Blackcurrant and a lick of vanilla oak combine for a great quaffing wine.

The Producer

Made from a wide range of quality vineyards in Riverina in South Eastern Australia, the grapes come from vines grown in loam soils. Classic varieties Chardonnay and Semillon are used for the whites, with the reds predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

The Winemaker

Winemaker Carmelo d'Aquino was recognised as Australian/New Zealand winemaker of the year in 2007. Carmelo grew up in Riverina, New South Wales, where he honed his exquisite wine making skills, which are beautifully endorsed by these mouth-watering wines.

The Region

The South-East Australia wine zone includes the states of South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales and produces wines from a variety of different vineyard sites across the smaller regions. While these can be inexpensive blended wines, some producers also use this as a way to create their own personal blends of regional styles.

Barbecued Lamb, Pepper & Halloumi

The rich flavours of barbecued lamb and pepper combined with salty halloumi need a crisp, fruity but relatively full-bodied red to soften the fattiness of the lamb. Think an Aussie Shiraz - Cabernet blend.

Mediterranean Wild Mushroom & Lentil Salad

An easy to prepare mid-week supper on its own or as a side dish with meat, this warm salad has plenty of gusty flavours which need a supple, silky red with soft tannins. This screams for the Cedar Creek from south-east Australia.
