It's always good when you discover a great value claret, so look no further than Chateau Ragottes. It's a firm customer favourite for good reason.

Made by Brigitte and Daniel Orsini whose family has been at the estate since 1943, this is red Bordeaux at its very best from an excellent vintage. 65% Merlot grapes are blended with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and aged in stainless steel to retain a pure fruit character.

There are notes of black fruits, sweet spice and liquorice with a lovely silky fruity finish. A wine to savour with good friends and good food.

A silky smooth Bordeaux red from the stunning 2016 vintage made at a family-run winery by a husband and wife team. If you're a fan of French wine, you'll love this smooth, elegant red.

The Producer

The wine estate of Château les Ragottes dates from the nineteenth century but remains of a vineyard going back to the Gallo-Roman period have been found in the immediate proximity. The Orsini family settled here in 1943 and at that time the estate consisted of three hectares of vines. Down the years the family steadily developed its winegrowing business and now, two generations of dedicated winegrowers later, the estate has grown to 18 hectares.

The Winemaker

The average age of the vines is 42 years and are planted on clay and sand knolls; the clay has a high iron oxide content similar to that found in Pomerol. The vines are planted on slopes where they can reap the full benefit of the microclimate as well as their southern orientation. The grapes are all machine harvested and taken to the winery where they are sorted and selected ready for fermentation. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats after which the wine is pumped into small vats to settle and age.

The Region

France’s largest and undoubtedly best-known wine region, Bordeaux is synonymous with world-class (and often expensive) red wines yet it produces a full range of styles from sweet to sparkling, with wines to suit every budget. The city of Bordeaux sits at the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, flowing in to the Gironde before reaching the Atlantic, a unique geographical feature that contributes to the amazing range of styles produced in the region. The rivers carve the region in to two distinct areas – the Right and Left Banks, and some surprising differences exist between the two sides.
