Some things in wine are constant, like the fact that Bordeaux produces some of the world's finest wines made from Cabernet and Merlot grapes. Or that you'll have to take out a second mortgage to be able to drink good red Bordeaux.

Right on the first, wrong on the second point. Here's a wine (mainly Merlot, with Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon) you'll find offers excellent claret character, yet won't cost you the shirt off your back. Plenty going on here, but being Merlot-dominant, tannins aren't too obvious. Plush, plummy and very delicious bargain Bordeaux red wine.

Best of all, for a magnum this is amazingly good value.

Bordeaux may produce some of the most expensive red wines in France, but you can still find top value wines if you know where to look. This Merlot-based red is the kind of claret you could happily enjoy and never have an inkling that it's so reasonably priced. Try with a traditional Sunday roast

Blue Cheese Burgers

Burgers and red wine are a match made in heaven but don’t forget the blue cheese element which could scupper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes (not forgetting acidity) of the cheese, head to full, fruity Bordeaux reds with good acidity, such as Château Mondain 2014.

Roast Lamb with Herb Butter

A simple roast lamb is a classic match for Château Mondain from Bordeaux and also works rather well with Tempranillo or herby Syrah styles.

Tartiflette

The rich combination of potato, cheese, bacon and garlic could stop anyone in their tracks so pick ripe reds with good acidity or structured whites which will both cut through the delicious stodge! Head straight to Bordeaux for a Tartiflette food match.
