Château Pomeys' vineyards are at one of the highest points of Moulis-en-Médoc, itself between Margaux and Saint-Julien. Owned by Patrick Meynard, his goal has been one of striving to improve his vineyards, and hence the wines themselves.

Results have been impressive, with this smart red Bordeaux garnering a slew of awards and critical acclaim. No herbicides are used on the estate, and various techniques are employed to help guarantee great grapes. (Things like reducing the number of bunches by green harvesting, and careful management of the leaf canopy so the sun can get to those that are left.)

And, with Éric Boissenot as a consultant, there's no doubting Pomey's commitment to quality (the Boissenot's advise many of the famous classed growths, as well as all the first growth Bordeaux wines).

This is a smooth wine full of black fruits and with a backdrop of fine tannins. It has a rich juicy character from the black plum and berry fruits along with bright acidity. The wine, a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, will develop relatively quickly. 88 points Wine Enthusiast

Cherry and plum-cake nose, then a rich palate with rather fine tannins and a long finish. Drink or hold. 90 points James Suckling

The Producer

Châteaux Pomeys AOC Moulis is "Bourgeois and proud to be".
There's no wine snobbery here. The Château lies between Margaux and Saint-Julien, on the highest ridge of the AOC Moulis. They have established facilities and combine tradition and modern winemaking techniques to ensure they get the very best from the 10 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet vines grown there.

Winemaking

The vines have an average age of 20 years and grapes harvested late to ensure that they are fully mature.
Château Pomeys is aged for 12 months in oak barrels to give added structure and that delicious vanilla aroma. One third in new barrels, a third in one-year-old wine barrels and the final third in two-year-old wine barrels - their signature style. The wine is then lightly filtered before bottling.

The Region

Moulis-en-Médoc is the smallest appellation of Médoc, Moulis is a strip with several amazing terroirs that contribute to the unique flavours of the region's world-renowned wines.
The balance of delicate aromas and power means that wines from this region have a good cellaring capacity.

Beef Stew and Dumplings

A hearty rich stew calls for a medium bodied, savoury red, rather than very rich, full bodied styles. Try Bordeaux's Château Pomeys for lighter, elegant styles.
