Made by Maison Brotte at their Châteauneuf estate Domaine de Barville, this is a homage to the Grenache grape, helped by a dash of Syrah. This has rich berry and macerated fruits combined with layers of spice and Southern French herbs. The result is a lush, decadent style with crisp, fresh finish. A great pairing with beef fillet or woody mushroom dishes.

Buy this if...you love Rhône reds.

Sumptuous dark fruits and spice - Châteauneuf savoir-faire at a Côtes du Rhône price.

The Producer

Maison Brotte was established in 1931 by Charles Brotte, who pioneered the bottling of Rhone wines for the appellation and four generations later, the business is still going strong with his grandson Laurent. Owned by Maison Brotte, Domaine Barville is the family property of Laurent Brotte, with 16 hectares situated in the heart of the Chateaneuf-du-Pape appellation on some of the areas' most prized soils. Brotte also produce wines from other Rhone appellations, including Tavel in the south and Crozes Hermitage in the north, working with local growers and overseeing the winemaking process.

The Winemaker

With a winemaking tradition going back four generations to 1880, innovation nevertheless plays an important part in the Brotte cellars. State-of-the-art machinery removes the very fragile Grenache grapes from the stems and all bottling is done by gravity and without the need for any filtration, ensuring perfect freshness and character in the final wines.

The Region

The sun-drenched Southern Rhône valley is home to the famous red wine appellations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (also made in to a rather delicious white), Gigondas and Vacqueyras, along with lesser-known but equally delicious cru of Tavel, producing very serious, full bodied ros_ wines, and Lirac, a great value appellation with rich but generally slightly lighter styles than the other cru. Large swathes of the region also produce the generic Côtes du Rhône and the more specific Côtes du Rhône Villages wines - which tend to be more approachable, easy-drinking styles offering good value for money.
