The Aspres area of the Languedoc is heavily influenced by northerly winds. So much so, in fact, that the Domaine completely replanted their vineyards to take account of this, and align them better with the sun's path during the course of a day.

It seems to have had the desired effect, producing wines such as this supple, plummy Merlot. The perfect antidote to a long day or a fine dinner companion, Lauriga's Merlot will likely become a firm favourite in your household.

The Producer

An estate with 60ha covering three of the Roussillon’s key terroirs, Lauriga is known for producing red wines of classic character.

Whilst white and rosé wines are also made, it’s the Carignan and Grenache Noir that are stars here (with the help of some newcomers too, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvédre and Merlot.

Now part of Domaines Paul Mas, this has led to massive improvement in the wines, thanks to investment in both vineyards and winery facilities.

We import two red wines from Lauriga which we’ve chosen for their Roussillon character and terrific value for money.

"Another estate that is owned by Domaines Paul Mas, whose tentacles spread across the Languedoc. The vines planted in clay and limestone soils, rich in gravel, this is a heart-warming and full-bodied Merlot, a little herbal note sitting atop plum and savoury, earthier characters. In the mouth it is flooded with sweet fruit, but it’s a nice combination of deeper, more sour black fruits and brighter, more supple red berries, the finish spicy and with a fair grip of roughening tannin that gives a bit of chew, and a bit of food-matching leeway, from a grilled lamb chop to venison casserole"

The Region

A mountainous, rugged region which makes up the southernmost piece of the larger Languedoc. Over 80% of France’s sweet vin doux naturel wines come from here, with still wines becoming more exciting with each passing vintage.

Looking for sun? Well, Roussillon gets an average 325 days a year, so ripening grapes isn’t an issue. Soils vary tremendously, but are always ancient, and frequently very poor. This forces vines to struggle to survive, with the benefit they tend to produce top-quality grapes.

It’s red wine territory, making up 80% of production for Côtes du Roussillon wines. And they’re often superb, with superstar winemakers like Pithon and Gauby creating wines of mesmerising beauty.
If you like gutsy, savoury reds, then Roussillon is very happy hunting ground.

Earthy lentil salads or stews match well with similarly savoury, earthy styles of wine. Although we're talking salad, don’t be afraid to try a medium-bodied red such as Pinot Noir or Merlot from Pays d'Oc. If you'd rather stick to whites, Chardonnay tends to cover the required flavour bases.

A hearty, rustic lamb casserole needs a rich, gutsy red with good acidity. Tuscan reds from the Sangiovese grape pair well with rich stews and tomato-based dishes, as does Domaine Lauriga Merlot.
