The best German white wines have to be among the wine world's true bargains. Like this single vineyard Riesling from Ernst Loosen, the man who's done so much to reinvigorate the reputation of German wines. It's a 'Grosse Lage' (like a grand cru), from vines clinging to steep Mosel Valley slopes on Devonian slate.

Handpicked grapes (you try driving a tractor on slopes like that) make for a Kabinett style Riesling that's hugely impressive. Delicate, there's a real wow-factor to the way fruit coupled with lemony refreshment dance over your taste buds.

Considering that this is one of the best German wines you can buy, it's fabulous value.

There's a buzz of electric acidity that hits the midpalate here, softened by tones of luscious peach, pineapple and guava. It's delicate and thrilling on the palate but lavishly floral and fruity through a long, reverberating finish. Wine Enthusiast

The Producer

A family-run estate for over 200 years, current owner Ernst Loosen took the reins in 1988. He soon realised that, with the estate's superlative vineyard sites in the middle Mosel valley, including ungrafted vines averaging over 50 years old, he had the very best raw materials at his disposal. He began by drastically reducing yields and moving away from chemical fertilisers. The estate has become a member of the prestigious VDP, Germany’s association of top-rated wine estates and has been named one of the ten best estates in Germany by nearly every wine publication worldwide.

The Winemaker

A love of archaeology should have led to a career studying the local Roman ruins but Ernst's father decided to hand the estate over to the next generation in the mid-eighties which precipitated a swift career change, with winemaking studies at Geisenheim and a world tour of vineyards from Austria to California. Since Ernst has taken over the business, the Dr Loosen wines have received countless awards across the world. One of the wine trade's larger than life characters, Ernst was named ' White Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge in 2005 and Decanter Man of the Year in the same year.

The Region

The Dr Loosen vineyards owe their quality to three major factors: the cool climate of the middle Mosel area, the mineral-rich slate and volcanic soils and the extreme age of the estate’s ungrafted vines. The Mosel’s steep south-facing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, with generally cool conditions allowing the grapes to ripen slowly whilst retaining bright acidity, while during cooler nights, the river holds heat to protect the vines. The Mosel’s slatey soil and numerous rocky outcroppings warm the vineyards by reflecting sunlight and holding the heat of the day. Old vines, some of which are around 120 years old, produce naturally lower yields, which results in a higher concentration of fruit and flavour in the wine.

The ripe, salty tang of blue cheese contrast brilliantly with the high acidity and fruit forward characteristics of top-notch German Pinot Gris and Riesling. We'd recommend starting with the Dr Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett.
