David Finlayson produces this stunning Syrah at his Edgebaston winery in Stellenbosch, with a nod to the grape's European heritage. This multi award winner also received 90 points from Robert Parker. The nose is beautifully fresh and inviting, with notes of pepper, blackberry, violets and wood smoke on the nose, leading to a dark, concentrated palate revved up with crisp acidity and a long savoury finish. Great with roast duck or smoked red meats or game.

Buy this if...you love classic Syrah flavours.

While it's delicious now, it will, like its French counterpart, improve with age: you could safely tuck it away in the cellar for six or seven years.'

The Producer

Small in size but large in stature, Edgebaston consists of just 22 hectares of vines. David oversees all vineyard and winemaking activity, with a holistic and quality-driven approach. The estate uses only organic fertilisers in the vineyards and care is taken at every step of the winemaking process to ensure that all wines are produced in the most environmentally friendly manner. The wines are enticing, fresh and pure, with an underlying but unmistakable European influence. As you might have guessed, awards are ten-a-penny, with Edgebaston wines regularly receiving top points in South African wine bible, The Platter Guide and the winery a winner in The Wine Merchant Top 100 awards.

The Winemaker

Named after his mother's birthplace, Edgebaston winery in Stellenbosch is the brainchild of David Finlayson who bought the original farm plot back in 2004. A third generation Cape winemaker whose grandfather Dr Maurice Finlayson started the family wine business at Hartenburg farm, David followed in his father Walter's footsteps, qualifying at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. Stints in Australia at Peter Lehmann Wines and in Bordeaux at the world renowned Chateau Margaux ensured a very well-rounded career path before returning to work with Walter at yet another stellar winery, Glen Carlou, in 1994.

The Region

The Edgebaston vineyards are planted on very deep, rich clay soils. This is unique to this particular part of Stellenbosch, which helps to produce wines with an excellent structure, classic style and very specific mineral character. A total of eleven varietals are grown on the estate, with both classic single varietal wines such as the Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah and 'rockstar' blends including The Pepper Pot Red and Berry Box White which offer a twist on the usual grape blends Ever the experimenter, David_s recent project - Camino African - involves cherry-picking specific plots and clonal selections for the release of two stunning wines - a Pinot Noir and Chenin Blanc - the culmination of his life and work in South Africa.

Frikkadels: South African Meatballs

These South African spiced meatballs are an easy pairing for red wines - the beef and pork combination will suit most medium-bodied reds but head for Merlot or Syrah for the right combination of soft fruit and structure. The Edgebaston Syrah would be a real treat.
