Grown on stony soils, this Cabernet Sauvignon is lively and fresh, with ripe fruit balanced nicely by soft, supple tannins. You'll notice hints of blueberry and mint on the nose, with the palate veering towards flavours of cherry, plum and hints of fresh herbs. There's no oak ageing so the flavours are more pure fruit than spicy, while the overall effect is one of mouth-watering, succulent freshness. The herby notes pair well with vegetable dishes such as baked aubergine or ratatouille but this also makes a great match for fruity roast duck.

Buy this if...you like bright, unoaked reds.

A great everyday Cab Sauv, need to get more in whilst it's still on offer. Denise

The Producer

The history of Cariñena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Cariñena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built at Grandes Vinos with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking

The Winemaker

The winemaker, Marcelo Morales Calderon, has worked at some of the best Chilean wineries, notably Carmen and Veramonte amongst others. He came to Cariñena for the vintage 13 years ago and stayed, as he was excited both by the quality of the fruit and the high standards of the facilities it had and still has at his disposal.

The Region

The co-operative has numerous vineyards with different microclimates and altitudes ranging from 320 to 850 metres above sea level. The continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers, is mitigated by a beneficial cool and dry wind, the Cierzo, which blows through the vineyards all year long and ensures the grapes are unaffected by mould or rot. Due to the altitude, age of vines and large diurnal variation, the wines have good intensity and achieve ripeness while retaining their acidity.

Barbequed Garlic and Herb Mushrooms

When you think barbecue, it doesn't have to be just meat. This simple and tasty vegan recipe takes delicious large mushrooms (Portobello would be ideal), add some tasty herbs, and that smoky taste that everyone loves. Because mushrooms have a strong savoury taste, they work well with a wide range of red wines. For starters try our El Circo Cabernet Sauvignon.
