The wines of Carinena first received their royal seal of approval in 1415 when the King of Spain suggested that Fernando 1 of Aragon take some on his trip to Nice. Today the region is perhaps dwarfed in stature by its better known neighbours Rioja and Priorat yet represents brilliant value for money. This Macabeo is made by the local cooperative and is beautifully fresh and light, with some richer tropical notes on the palate.

Buy this if….you want a fresh, food friendly white which doesn’t break the bank.

Spain's go-to white grape for light, easy-drinking styles, this is fresh, juicy and brimming with fruit salad flavours.

The Producer

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

The Winemaker

The winemaker, Marcelo Morales Calderon, has worked at some of the best Chilean wineries, notably Carmen and Veramonte amongst others. He came to Carinena for the vintage 13 years ago and stayed, as he was excited both by the quality of the fruit and the high standards of the facilities it had and still has at his disposal.

The Region

The co-operative has numerous vineyards with different microclimates and altitudes ranging from 320 to 850 metres above sea level. The continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers, is mitigated by a beneficial cool and dry wind, the Cierzo, which blows through the vineyards all year long and ensures the grapes are unaffected by mould or rot. Due to the altitude, age of vines and large diurnal variation, the wines have good intensity and achieve ripeness while retaining their acidity.
