The Producer

Nearly a decade ago Felipe Tosso, head winemaker at Ventisquero and John Duval, one of Australia’s leading winemakers, set out to create a different wine: a complex, elegant blend in the Bordeaux style. Their search led them to Maipo Alto where they narrowed their investigation until they reached Pique, an area nurtured by the influence of the Andes mountains and the Maipo River.

The Winemakers

These two experienced winemakers agreed that this Cabernet should be a unique blend, classic but with Chilean identity. The blend therefore includes Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenere. Each variety was harvested at a different time, being picked at optimum ripeness to aid complexity. The grapes underwent a classic fermentation, followed by a post-fermentative maceration with the skins for 3-5 weeks. The wine was then put into barrel and aged in 225 litre French barrels for 18 months. 50% of the barrels were new and the rest were one year old. It was then allowed a further one year of ageing in bottle before release.

The Region

Blessed by a Mediterranean climate with more extreme temperature oscillations than the Central Valley and coastal areas, the Maipo is an enclave with good drainage and low fertility, where the grapes growing on the well balanced vines (which are over 20 years old) ripen slowly, producing Cabernets with fresher flavours, great structure and firm, elegant tannins. The grapes come mainly from two plots of Cabernet Sauvignon in Pirque (the mountains south of Santiago), one at almost 1,000 metres above sea level in San Juan de Pirque and the other at an altitude of 750 metres in the El Principal area of Pirque.
