This is a gorgeously ripe Touriga Nacional made by renowned winemaker Jose Neiva Correia, who recently won Portugal Producer of the Year at the NYIWC 2015. It's dark, ripe and medium-bodied wine with lovely ripe blackcurrant aromas. The palate is soft and velvety with good acidity which gives the wine a lovely freshness. Exclusive to Rude Wines.

'A rich black fruit-scented red with real character. Think pure Cabernet Sauvignon and you will be near.'

The Producer

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price! DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"From Lisboa, just a few kilometres north along the coast from Lisbon, this wine is made by star winemaker of the region, Jose Neiva Correia, the pure Touriga Nacional aged in older oak barrels. Deep crimson in colour, the wine offers a lovely amalgam of spices and blackcurrant, but seems fresh too touched by a little leafy lift. In the mouth the flood of sweet, generous fruit fills the mouth. It’s not totally dry, so that sweetness of fruit is magnified, running through the mid-palate to a finish of light-grained tannins and juicy cherry acidity to leave this moreish and fruity"

The Region

Sunshine is not in short supply in this picturesque region of rolling hills, yet cooling Atlantic breezes allow for a long, slow ripening period for the grapes which lends a fresh, elegant touch to the wines. A total of seventeen grape varieties are grown across a wide area with white varieties are planted in cooler vineyards nearer the ocean, red varieties in warmer vineyards further inland. Extensive research is always on the cards, and José is credited with the introduction of several new varietals to the region including Albarino, Pinot Noir and more recently Dornfelder.

Roast Pheasant with Lemon & Rosemary

Contrast the delicate savoury flavours in this dish with a medium-bodied red with good fruit intensity. You don’t want to go for overly tannic styles which will overpower the meat so stick to soft, supple styles such our Portuguese Escada.

Baked Stuffed Aubergine with Walnut & Roquefort

With a lot of strong, rich flavours in this baked dish, you need to match the salty cheese with acidic tomato, savoury aubergine and nuts. Try a Portuguese red with enough fruit flavour to contrast with the saltiness in the cheese.

Feijoada

A robust Portuguese pork stew that's not for the faint-hearted, this needs a ripe, juicy red wine to stand up to the porky flavours. Try our classic Portuguese red Escada, it's a delightful match for this dish.
