Exton Park's seen praise heaped upon it, and is producing some of the most exciting new English sparkling wines we've seen for some time. This, their Blanc de Blancs, was their first vintage wine (one with the year on the label), and it's a superb English sparkling Chardonnay wine.

Described by Jamie Goode as 'fine, pure and fruity with real finesse' (scoring 91/100), it's just 11.5% alcohol and is your ideal introduction to this style of sparkling wine. Behind the refreshing citrus centre of the wine, there are hints of toast and honey (just like you'd expect from a good Blanc de Blancs Champagne), and those years in the bottle have added layers of extra interest.

The Producer

Hampshire's fast becoming a hotbed of top English sparkling wine production. The first vines were planted at Exton Park in 2003. With a second planting in 2009, the estate was bought by Malcolm Isaac who continued to sell the grapes to another Hampshire wine producer, Coates & Seely.

In 2011 he chose to enlarge the vineyard, invest in a cellar and start producing wines under the Exton Park name. A key decision is the use of only their own grapes (many English sparkling wines source grapes from multiple vineyard sites around the country), so what you'll taste is a true reflection of the Meon Valley's chalky soils.

"The Chardonnay was very special in this year, and this 100% Chardonnay cuvée is utterly convincing proof that the best English sparkling wines can stand confidently in line with the best. It has a lovely golden hue, with toffee and nutty notes over bruised pear and apple fruit and some leafy, herbal tones giving real complexity and richness. The palate pushes through with immense precision, the cool, zesty and pithy lemon rind quality and seashell mineral richness gives this lovely balance and focused length. That minerality is so pronounced from these chalky soils of the South Downs"

The Region

Vines have been grown in England since Roman times, but it was in Hampshire that the first English commercial vineyard was established in 1952 at Hambledon. Since then the southern county has enjoyed considerable success with its wines, with estates like Hattingley and Exton Park quickly becoming regarded as among England's best wineries.

Exton Park's 55 hectares of vineyard are on chalky (high alkaline) soils, sloping away so they get great exposure to the sun over the ripening period. What's really exciting about these Hampshire wines is you're tasting a true representation of the estate's fantastic potential, using just their own fruit.
