The Liberty Chenin Blanc is sourced from Fairtrade certified vineyards in Swartland in the Western Cape, with winemaking overseen by Charles Back and the Fairview winemaking team. Bright, tropical notes on the nose are complemented nicely on the palate with fresh citrus, apple and a taut, crisp finish. Works well with Asian spices or roast pork belly.
Buy this if...you're after a Chardonnay alternative.

Sustainable, Vegan and Vegetarian.

Zingy citrus and tropical flavours vie for attention in this stunning Fairtrade Chenin.

The Producer

In 2007 Fairview owner Charles Back chanced upon a co-operative winery in Citrusdal, 2 hours north of Cape Town and formed a consortium to bring the winery back to full working capacity. With 50% of the production certified as Fairtrade since 2003, and part owned by the farmers since 2007, this was the ideal opportunity to build upon the social improvement engendered through the Fairtrade premium - hence the choice of the name: 'Liberty'.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"What a lovely waxy, lanolin and lemon rind quality on the nose of this Fairtrade wine made by maestro Charles Back, from vineyards in Swartland and other parts of the Western Cape. With a guarantee of fair conditions and pay for the vineyard workers, enjoy the full, ripe palate with its golden delicious apple flavour and whistle-fresh acidity. Dee-licious"

The Region

The grapes are sourced from Fairtrade certified vineyards predominantly in the Berg en Dal farm in the Swartland region. These vineyards are trellised and grow on sandy, loam soils.

BBQ Halloumi & Vegetable Kebabs

Pair salty Halloumi with ripe citrussy whites - Mediterannean or ripe New World styles work a treat. We'd recommend our South African Liberty Fairtrade Chenin Blanc.

Salmon & Avocado Rice

An easy-peasy Japanese-style rice with creamy avocado and salmon, this needs a vibrant white with good acidity to balance the rich flavours - try a dry Chenin BLanc form South Africa.

Pea & Goat's Cheese Risotto

Risottos pair well with both reds and whites so consider the other ingredients when choosing a wine match - the combination of sweet peas and salty goats cheese call for a vibrant white with lots of fruit flavour - try northern Italian or South African whites such as Chenin Blanc.
