Made for Fairview by winemaker Anthony de Jager from vineyards on the sheltered slopes of Mount Paarl, this Pinotage is a South African cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Aged for 10 month in oak, you'll find the classic raspberry and plum aromas touched by a hint of oaky spiciness. The palate is rich and ripe, with plenty of plummy fruit and complex layers of spice. Great with grilled beef or stronger flavoured game.

The Producer

Fairview is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Paarl, which is more sheltered from the moderating maritime influence than nearby Stellenbosch. Vines were planted here as early as 1699. The property was bought by the grandfather of current owner Charles Back in 1937. Fairview has a reputation for consistent quality across a range of innovative styles, using both classic and unusual varieties. Charles leads the field in South Africa in matching varieties to specific sites and in 2014, he received a lifetime achievement from the International Wine Challenge.

The Winemaker

Winemaking team Anthony de Jager, Adele Dunbar and Stephanie Wild who joined Fairview in 1996, 2005 and 2009 respectively have between then a wealth of expertise with which to harness the concentration and intensity of Fairview's wonderful grapes. Anthony was involved in the making of the first genuine straw wine in the country; in the first South African plantings of varieties like Mourvèdre, Tannat and Petite Sirah and in the rediscovery of old vine Grenache and Carignan.

The Region

The Fairview estate now has a total of 586 hectares of vineyard over four appellations: Paarl (350 hectares), Swartland (115 hectares), Darling (86 hectares) and Stellenbosch (35 hectares). This vineyard ownership in so many different regions allows Charles to produce a wide range of wines, from grapes grown in optimal conditions.
