The Liberty Shiraz is sourced from Fairtrade certified vineyards in Swartland in the Western Cape, with winemaking overseen by Charles Back and the Fairview winemaking team. Six months oak ageing gives aromatic berry notes leading through to rich bramble fruit flavours and lovely soft, ripe tannins. Try this with bbq meats, ribs or spicy sausages.

Buy this if...you love a ripe, spicy Shiraz.

The Producer

In 2007 Fairview owner Charles Back chanced upon a co-operative winery in Citrusdal, 2 hours north of Cape Town and formed a consortium to bring the winery back to full working capacity. With 50% of the production certified as Fairtrade since 2003, and part owned by the farmers since 2007, this was the ideal opportunity to build upon the social improvement engendered through the Fairtrade premium - hence the choice of the name: 'Liberty'.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Sumptuous stuff, this is suffused with smoky black chocolate over the ripe, bursting damson plum and blackberry fruit. Heaving with deep fruit and tobacco spices, it is a dense and chewily smooth wine, but it has tang and vibrancy too. It’s blockbuster Shiraz with a bit of elegance thrown into the mix, in a super package for this money. 89/100."

The Region

The grapes are sourced from Fairtrade certified vineyards predominantly in the Berg en Dal farm in the Swartland region. These vineyards are trellised and grow on sandy, loam soils.

Great for the price - thanks Olly

I've got to hand it to Olly a great pick. It's as good or better than Shiraz's that are 50% or more the price.
Nose - Spicy
Palate - rich and fruity
Finish - smooth with a hot mouth feel and no tannins

Barbecued Lamb with Sauteed Spring Vegetables

Succulent, caramelised lamb chops with vibrant greens pair perfectly with the ripe, juicy black fruits in lush, medium bodied reds.

Potatoes with Chorizo

Spicy meats need a medium bodied red with bright fruit flavours. Try a smooth Tempranillo or spiced New World Shiraz.

Venison Stew with Sage-infused Glazed Carrots

Rich earthy flavours call for rich earthy wines. Thankfully most countries offer a red that fits this category, think South Africa and you won’t be disappointed.
