You may well have come across Tempranillo before; it's the Spanish red grape variety that's often found in Rioja. But you might not be so familiar with Bobal, a variety which gives its red wines a very deep colour, but still have a crisp lightness about them.

The end result is a really good value red wine which possesses enough depth and structure to work well with food, but can equally be enjoyed as a glass or two of refreshing Spanish wine on its own.

Meet a Spanish red wine that ticks all the boxes. It's from Utiel-Requena, down in Spain's south, where sun to ripen the grapes is guaranteed, and flavour-packed wines are the norm. Cracking value red wine

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"A decent quaffer this at the reduced price, basically a Rioja lookalike with the local Bobal grape joining Rioja’s Tempranillo, and two years of ageing at least six months of which was in barrel. Fruity, light, a glimpse of tobacco, but mostly berry fruit. In the mouth it is juicy with its raspberry and red plum fruit, a touch of spice and a slightly harsh finish"

The Region

To the west of the Province of Valencia lies the region of Utiel-Requena that takes its name from the two towns – Utiel and Requena. Utiel-Requena produces robust and powerful reds, predominantly using the Bobal grape.

Light and fruity

Had this on its own as the evening was quite cool for summer as an alternative to a white wine. It was light and suitably refreshing. Nice and fruity without being in anyway heavy or overpowering. Very nice.

Blackened Steak With Red Wine Jus

A simple rump steak calls for a rich red to square up to the dense structure of the meat. Head to reds with some oak ageing to give a touch of spice and a good dollop of fruit to compliment the black peper corns. Bobal -Tempranillo blend from Faustino Rivero is a beautiful match.
