South Africa's calling card, Chenin Blanc has made a major comeback, with everything from light, fresh citrusy styles to rich, full-bodied whites. This easy-drinking style is made from Chenin grapes grown in the Paarl Valley. It's dry but with lots of ripe tropical fruit and floral aromas and enticing flavours of tropical fruit leading to a lovely long finish. A great pairing with full-flavoured fish or chicken dishes and will match brilliantly with vegetarian dishes such as roasted butternut squash.

Buy this're looking for an everyday white that punches above its weight.

Fresh and floral with lots of tropical fruit flavours.

The Producer

Situated in the picturesque Paarl Valley, Boland Cellars has been nominated as one of South Africa's top export companies, one of the top 100 wine producers in the world by the World Association of Wine & Spirits writers as well as being one of the top producers in Paarl. Focussing very strongly on the merits of what they call 'regionality', the team have been working for more than six decades in the Paarl region, time which has allowed their viticulturists to isolate five different climatic zones.

The Winemaker

Although Boland Cellar advocates a virtual 'hands-off' approach in the cellar, they recognise that the viticulturist and winemaker nonetheless have many crucial decisions to make, from vineyard maintenance to blending and bottling.

The Region

The Paarl region is marked by a Mediterranean climate of warm dry summers and mild but wet winters, the cooling influence of the nearby ocean and cool mountain slopes with slower ripening grapes. By identifying five distinct micro climates within the region, the viticultural team have been able to cherry-pick varietals best suited to specific vineyard sites.

Wine Review

All the wines were very good but the Five Climates Chenin Blanc was a personal favourite. Re-ordered some more and was delivered within 24 hours. Great service, thank you.

Glad to say that my mixed case wasn't all bad. This was a pleasant light white wine which we enjoyed with, I think, a salad. If I have tried a Chenin before I cannot remember but this will be on a possible list in future.

Salad Nicoise

Try a light, fresh white with this classic salad - the tuna works well with crisp, easy-drinking styles such as Sauvignon or South African Chenin Blanc.

Spicy Pork Curry

Try this aromatic pork dish with its layers of complex spice with a vibrant, ripe white (not too dry) which will balance out the heat of the curry without overshadowing the rich flavours. Our Five Climates Chenin Blanc is a great match.

Cauliflower Steaks with Olive and Herb Salsa

On trend and animal-friendly. Cauliflower steaks are vegan, nutritious and delicious. Especially with this Mediterranean salsa. It's impressive enough to be the focal point of the meal or will pair beautifully with fresh meat or fish. But, first and foremost, eat these cauli steaks with a glass of Chenin from Paarl, South Africa.
