An estate owned by the direct descendants of Jean Loron, the nine hectares of vines are located right in the village of Fleurie. If we're getting in to stereotypes, then this Beaujolais cru is well-known for its delicate, feminine style, with fragrant fruit and floral notes. A product of the excellent 2015 vintage, this is aged in large vats and wooden barrels for eight to nine months - there are perfumed berry notes, particularly blueberry and raspberry, while the palate is nicely structured and savoury, with hints of herbs and liquorice. This one might suit a beef carpaccio.

The Producer

With a history going back over 300 years, Maison Jean Loron knows a thing or two about the production of top Beaujolais. The house is now owned by the 8th generation of the Loron family, Xavier Barbet, who in 2016 handed over the day to day running of the business to Philippe Bardet. Today the house owns 120 hectares of vineyards across seven of the Beaujolais Cru as well as owning and working with growers in the Maconnais region of southern Burgundy.

The Winemaker

Technical director Jean-Pierre Rodet oversees the winemaking for Maison Jean Loron, with winemakers Rémi Vincent and Denis Poyet focussing on the expression of the terroir and of the Chardonnay and Gamay grapes in the various crus and vineyard sites spread across the two regions. Jean-Pierre is himself a winemaking veteran, with thirty years’ service for Loron.

The Region

The Beaujolais region sits in the central eastern region of France, with Burgundy to the north and the city of Lyon to the south. It shares similarities to Burgundy in terms of climate and it’s a long thin band of vineyards bordered by hills to the west and river to the east but here the similarity ends. The region is characterised by dark granite soils and split between the generic Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages wines, and the more serious Cru, of which there are ten.
