Here's an Italian white wine which combines easy-drinking refreshment with crisp, lively character. Up in north-eastern Italy, the Garganega grape variety makes some of the best white wines you'll find anywhere.

Sure, it's Soave that's the most famous, but Gambellara makes a compelling case to widen your drinking horizons (and actually became a region two years before Soave). This is a 'Classico', so comes from vineyards in the original region, before it was expanded.

Expect that lemon sherbert, almond and hint of spice nature that makes Gambellara so moreish and satisfying. It's an aromatic, elegant Italian white wine you'll be glad you've met.

The Producer

Italian wine co-operatives are brilliant at producing top-notch, great value wines. The Cantina di Gambellara was founded in 1947 and has nearly 300 members who farm 600 hectares in this small denomination on the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona only a few miles east of Soave. Last year, this cantina merged with the Cantina dei Colli Vicentini where Alberto Marchisio is now responsible for winemaking.

"After 25 years of writing about wine professionally it is very rare for me to come across a wine region for the very first time, but I confess I was unaware of Gambellara, sited next door to Soave in northern Italy, and making similar wines from the same grapes – in this case 100% Garganega. From old vines planted in volcanic soils, this has fairly subdued oatmeal and citrus aromas, but it virtually explodes onto the palate with intense, tight-as-a-drum tangy fruit, a wine with real ‘nervosity’, offset by a touch of sweetness just in the finish. There’s a lovely sense of unforced concentration here"

The Region

To the east of Soave in the Veneto region lies Gambellara, surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of hills at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. The vineyard is planted between 100-350 metres on a north-south facing slope, providing the best combination of soil, aspect and micro-climate.
