Good Red Wine Choices

You could happily pull any bottle from this red wine case and be chuffed with the wine your pouring. So what are you getting that's so good? Malbec fans will enjoy both the classic Cahors, from its French homeland, and the majestic Mendoza wine too.

Ripe and rich Australian Cabernet Sauvignon wine makes a good comparison with the Cabernet-Merlot South African blend. Then there's a Sicilian Syrah you simply can't refuse, and a Portuguese red blend full of sunshine fruit flavours.

They're all good red wines, there's no doubt. With or without food, for sharing or solo. So which will be your favourite wines from this stellar collection?

Wines that hit the spot every time. Taking in top wine regions of the world, you've everything from Syrah to Cabernet Sauvignon, Portuguese red blend to great Argentinean Malbec. These are red wines aimed at showing how good red wines needn't be boring or pedestrian. Enjoy the variety and quality

This gutsy vegetarian one pot wonder combines the meaty textures of aubergine and mushrooms to produce a really hearty dish. There's quite a New World modernity to this Malbec with its chocolate and ripe tannins, but they're in decent balance and there's a plush warming black fruit to finish.'

In the Cahors region in the south-west of France, Château Vincens lies off the beaten track, close to Luzech, where the Vincens family has built up its holdings of vines to the 33ha cultivated today. Philippe Vincens now runs the property with his sister lsabelle, though their Father Michel still keeps a very close eye on the vine

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

Top 10 Best-Selling Red Wine

A blend of the rare Caladoc grape with Tinta Roriz, this wine is all juicy fruit. Yes, a light sense of structure gives the wine shape, but the bold berry fruits give it a refreshing, ready-to-drink character. Enjoy now. Wine Enthusiast 87 pts

The Producer

Founded by wine-making legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DFJ Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Top 20 Best-Selling Red Wine

A well-balanced wine that was a great pleasure to drink with or without food. It went very well with grilled pork loin steaks. The label says "unpretentious", and, for once, the label is spot on. Christopher

The Producer

It was all thanks to a pioneering Scotsman named Christopher Forrest Rigg (you would have to be an intrepid explorer with a name like that) that the town and farming community of Bonnievale came in to existence. Arriving in the arid Breede River Valley, due east of Cape Town, at the turn of the 20th Century, he set about developing the basis for an irrigation canal that would allow the entire valley to be farmed. As a parting shot he named the town and valley Bonnievale (Beautiful Valley) after his grandfathers_ home in Scotland. One of three wineries in the valley by the 1990_s, Bonnievale Cellar joined forces with its neighbours in 2006 to create a co-operative of more than 100 grape growers.

Roast Pheasant with Lemon & Rosemary

Contrast the delicate savoury flavours in this dish with a light to medium-bodied red with good fruit intensity. You don_t want to go for overly tannic styles which will overpower the meat so stick to soft, supple styles such as New World Merlots or lighter European reds. Full recipe

Top Wine

I've had this wine in three cases and I have to say it comes out top every time. A smooth red that I love drinking on its own or with a light snack.

Excellent, easy-drinking wine at an excellent price

Medium bodied wine with an initial hint of cherries and other fruit flavours, followed by a discernible vanilla finish, though I could not detect the promised fig flavours. Lighter alcohol content (ideal for mid-week) and good value for a very drinkable wine, with or without food accompaniment.

By Mike on 16th January 2019
