Grand Italian Wine Tour Grand Italian Wine Tour Grand Italian Wine Tour

Tip to toe, Italy has more to offer the inquisitive wine drinker than any other wine-producing country. Thanks to a host of native grape varieties, a maze of small wine regions, and a fierce individuality, Italian wines give you more choice than you could dream of.

Here you'll taste your way around some of Italy's best wine regions, from Piedmont and the Veneto in the north, down to Tuscany and Abruzzo, on south to Puglia, and taking in the Meditteranean's largest island, Sicily, too.

Highlights? You'll be the judge of that, but for our money wines like Capezzana's Barco Reale, showcasing Sangiovese, Fratelli Ponte's gorgeous Barbera, and the rich and satisfying Fiore di Vigna are all up there. Then again, single vineyard Gavi, organic Primitivo, and the fruity Il Faggio Montepulciano (so good with pizza and pasta we've popped two bottles in) are all worthy contenders.

One thing's for certain, you'll not tire of the Italian wines in this case. Taste your way around Italy's rewarding wines, taking in over a dozen uniquely Italian grape varieties and plenty of variety in style too

Millefiori Rosso del Veneto Appassimento 2015, Veneto

0 review(s)

Another terrific Italian red wine made in the appassimento style (grapes are partially dried to concentrate flavours before being turned into wine). Here Italian (Corvina) meets international (Merlot) grape varieties. Cherries, dried fruit, chocolate, prunes... it's a bit like Christmas in a bottle, you can enjoy year round

The Giustiniana estate stretches out over 110 hectares, with 40 under vine and at high altitudes of between 300-500m above sea level near the commune of Roverto. The estate has banned all use of pesticides and yields are kept very low to retain the pure fruit character. With a winemaking history going back as far as 1250, the Giustiniana family became owners in the only slightly more recent past, in 1625. The single vineyard Gavi di Gavis are the estate's flagship wines, both with a unique and very different character.

Roast Chicken with Garlic & Lemon

Roast chicken is an extremely versatile dish to pair with both light reds and whites. The addition of lemon needs a white with zesty, citrus notes to complement the chicken juices - try Gavi di Gavi or Portuguese whites for the suitably lemony tones. Full recipe

Il Faggio is made by Alana McGettigan at one of the region's best co-operatives in the northern part of the Abruzzi. The aim is to capture in the bottle the power and intensity of the grape, together with a lift and freshness which is seldom found in wines from this area. The name Il Faggio derives from the fabulous beech trees which proliferate in this area, especially in the Abruzzo national park.

Italian wine co-operatives are brilliant at producing top-notch, great value wines. The Cantina di Gambellara was founded in 1947 and has nearly 300 members who farm 600 hectares in this small denomination on the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona only a few miles east of Soave. Last year, this cantina merged with the Cantina dei Colli Vicentini where Alberto Marchisio is now responsible for winemaking.

This family-owned winemaking business was established shortly after the Second World War when Carlo Ponte began growing and producing Barbera in the village of San Damiano d’Asti. The wine-making tradition was passed down to his son Giuseppe in 1968, with a new cellar in Frazione Gorzano and the creation of Fratelli Ponte Vini. Giuseppe rapidly increased the vineyard holding and range of wines before passing over the reins to his sons Massimo, Ivan and Renato who are involved in every step of the winemaking process from vineyard to bottle.

Set in the idyllic rolling hills of the Veneto’s Pre-Alps, the Val d’Oca co-operative was established in 1952 by a handful of grape growers who saw the benefits of co-operation as a solution to face the economic difficulties of the post-war period. They couldn’t have envisaged what a good idea that was at the time – the co-operative has now grown to 576 members with over 700 hectares of vineyards, enabling smaller farmers to continue working the land.

Lovely smooth easy drinking

An exceptionally easy drinking red - no need to leave it to breathe, although it helps even more. Blackberry notes with no heavy tannins. Obviously good with pasta, but also lovely to drink on its own. I normally err towards big reds, but was very happy with this and didn't miss the chunkiness at all.
