Great Global Grenache Wines

Great Global Grenache Wines

If you're not that familiar with Grenache wines, here's the ideal opportunity to get to know one of the wine world's unsung heroes. As a grape variety, Grenache is both tough and a sun-worshipper. Wind won't affect it, and the rougher the terrain, the better. It's possibly the most drought-tolerant variety there is and is often grown without any help, forming gnarled, twisted vines that can live for decades.

And the wine? Much like its parents; strong stuff, often with a very moreish 'jampot' quality to the red wines it makes. When it's a truly serious Grenache wine though, you'll get aromas to die for, and a sumptuous, velvety palate to remember. Wines like the Priorat, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Barossa red blend in this case.

Some of the best red wines you'll ever taste. Likey to make you a Grenache fan for life.

France, Spain, Australia: the countries where Grenache thrives like nowhere else. These are red wines to treasure and enjoy. No wimpy wines here. Red wines with buckets of character, aromas, and flavour. The red wine case that's full of terrific surprises

Willunga 100 takes its name from the 'Hundred', an administrative area of 100 sq miles formed in 1839, just three years after the settlement of South Australia, and now the source for most of the winery's fruit. The first vintage was in 2005, following the discovery of fifty year old Grenache vineyards in the McLaren Vale, which prompted the Willunga team to make this their main focus. The combination of low yields from very old vines all help to produce intense wines with great levels of fruit concentration.

The venture of Zar Brooks, his winemaking wife, Elena, and growers Carl Lindner and Brad Rey, Dandelion Vineyards is a fusion of vineyard sites, named after the humble dandelion which grows amongst the vines, preventing the growth of weeds and providing mulch for the soils. Wines are made from vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Fleurie and McLaren Vale.

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

This seven hectare property has been in the Ferrando family for 150 years. The weathered old vines yield tiny quantities of fruit for all three of the Mas La Mola wines. Only 650 bottles are made of the top wine, the “Vinyeta Vella” (ancient vineyard) as yields of just 300 grams of fruit are harvested from each vine.

A historical Rhône estate since 1834 when Antoine Jaboulet began buying and farming the land around the town of Tain l’Hermitage, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has grown into one of the best known and most admired names in the Rhône Valley, synonymous with a broad range of top quality Rhône Cru and benchmark generic appellations. Six generations of the Jaboulet family carried on this family tradition, purchasing some of what would become the most prized vineyard locations in the region. Following nearly two centuries of family ownership, Maison Paul Jaboulet was bought in 2006 by the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux.

An estate with 60ha covering three of the Roussillon’s key terroirs, Lauriga is known for producing red wines of classic character.

Whilst white and rosé wines are also made, it’s the Carignan and Grenache Noir that are stars here (with the help of some newcomers too, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvédre and Merlot.

Now part of Domaines Paul Mas, this has led to massive improvement in the wines, thanks to investment in both vineyards and winery facilities.

We import two red wines from Lauriga which we’ve chosen for their Roussillon character and terrific value for money.

An estate of 68ha in the heart of the large Corbières region, with vineyards planted on stony soil. The grape varieties planted focus on the red, unsurprisingly given 95% of the region’s wines are red.

Recently a member of Domaines Paul Mas, that ownership has seen plenty of new investment, with the cellar completely overhauled in 2014. Now gravity moves the juice and wine around, not pumps, and focused winemaking producers red wines that really show what Corbières can produce.

Even the barrels are a bit different here, using 50hl conical barrels rather than the traditional style you’d recognise.

We’ve shipped direct to keep the price down, and think you’ll love this classic French regional producer’s wine.

Definitely a favorite

We have tried this wine a few times now as part of mixed cases, and it's become our go-to favourite. It has never disappointed, with food or on its own. Smooth, with just the right amount of fruitiness - neither overpowering nor too delicate - and every sip transports us from dreary weather to memories of summer and warm, delicious locations. We love it!!
