One of the world's great white wines, German Riesling has languished in the background for far too long. Take this terrific example from Nierstein. It's bursting with lively fruit flavours - green apples, citrus, pineapple, melon - all tautly held together by superbly balanced sweetness and acidity.

If you've never tasted really good Riesling, this is your ideal opportunity to try an outstanding example. As Jancis Robinson says, Riesling could well be "the world's most misunderstood, and mispronounced, grape variety..." (it's Reece-ling).

Nierstein is the town; the Bergkirche bit refers to the loam soils the Riesling's planted on. And absolutely fabulous is the feeling you'll get from drinking this knockout white wine.

Here's a cool-climate German Riesling that's deliciously fruity and so delicately balanced. It's the kind of white wine which makes you realise why so many wine writers rate Riesling their top grape variety. Don't worry about the mouthful of a name, just revel in the explosion of flavours you'll experience

The Producer

Louis Konstantin Guntrum is the 11th generation, Louis Guntrum, to manage the estate. With family winemaking roots going back to 1648 they offer the best of 'two worlds' harmoniously blending modern technology, where appropriate, with traditional approaches and ideas. Louis Guntrum strives to combine the origin, the grapes and the atmosphere of cellars to create an unforgettable drinking experience.

The Winemaker

The beginning of the harvest is always determined by the owner Mr Louis Konstantin Guntrum, who checks the state of the grapes concerning ripeness and healthiness. As the manager and owner of the estate, he invests in the winery to ensure the production of some of Germany's finest wines.
With 11 generations of winemaking running through his veins, it is not surprising that Louis Konstantin Guntrum is scooping up awards and accolades due to his speciality winemaking.

The Region

Situated on the banks of the Rhine river, Nierstein is a town dominated by wine growing. It forms part of the Rheinhessen region and is situated between the cities of Mainz and Worms.
The vineyards are situated on the steep hillsides along the Rhine's backs and arguably amongst the best in Germany. Vines grow well as the Rheinhessen region as a whole is protected by hills on the western border sheltering the vines an allowing the grapes to ripen fully.
