This oak-aged Monastrell (a grape known in France as Mourvèdre) was produced by Bodegas Castaño on two high altitude older vineyards averaging 750m above sea level. There's a specific microclimate in these areas that differentiate it from the rest of the estate's holdings, with very cold winters and hot summers, leading to greater depth and concentration in the wines. You'll find an aromatic glassful, with raspberry and liquorice notes and a floral hint. To taste (or rather to drink), it's ripe and rich, with smooth black fruit laced with vanilla spice from the oak.

Buy this if...you like dark, full-bodied reds.

Sumptuous, spicy and seriously smooth - we like alliteration almost as much as we like this wine...

The Producer

The family-run estate of Bodegas Castaño traces its winemaking history back through several generations and is widely regarded as one of the top producers in the region, producing mostly Monastrell (the French Mourvèdre) on high altitude vineyards

The Winemaker

Winemaker Mariano Lopez ferments the Monastrell grapes in stainless steel tanks, followed by six months ageing in oak (50% of which was new). A mixture of French and American oak was used (approximately 80/20).

The Region

Yecla is a small wine producing area in the south-eastern corner of Spain in the region of Murcia. A combination of very dry conditions and high altitude vineyards (around 750m above sea level) leads to the production of warm, juicy Spanish styles and light, tropical whites.
