A blend of the classic Rhône grape varietals Grenache (85%), Syrah (10%) and Mourvèdre (5%), this French red wine has real character. What's more, it's brilliant value too.

The grapes for this wine are from vineyards near to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation so the soils are of a similar composition to this top terrain and the quality of this wine is a notch up from the norm. The clay, limestone and round pebbles in the vineyards capture the sun's heat which radiates evenly to help ripen grapes perfectly. The wine is bottled at the same estate it was made at. The result is a smooth, generous, rounded wine with plenty of fruit character of redcurrants, blackcurrants with a slightly peppery aftertaste.

One of the best value Côtes du Rhônes around, and just the ticket with anything from bangers to barbecues, or a relaxing glass of red wine by itself.

We're always on the lookout for great value, reliable quaffing wines for our wine racks at home and France always seems to provide rich pickings. When we tasted this juicy estate-bottled Côtes du Rhône we were sure we'd found a future French favourite. This is a step up from most Côtes du Rhône wines and is smooth, fruity and very tasty.

The Producer

Hubert & Fils have been producing red Côtes du Rhône wines for years, so they really know a thing or two about winemaking. They prefer to bottle their wines in house, seeing production through from harvest to vinification, right through to bottling, which really is a sign of a conscientious producer.

The Winemaker

The winemaker at Hubert et Fils chose to de-stalk the grapes then the grapes and their juice underwent 2 weeks of maceration with daily pumping over to aerate the mixture. The wine was fermented at a controlled temperature of 27- 32°C. It was then aged for 6 months in concrete and no oak was used in the process in order to show the purest expression of the fruit and terroir.

The Region

The Rhône region has long been famous for its red and white wine production, with stellar wines like Châteauneuf du Pape, Condrieu and Gigongas made here.
The region is generally seen as two distinct regions, the Northern and Southern Rhône. The Northern area has a steep and hilly terrain with vineyards perched high on the terraced banks of the Rhône river. The most expensive wines tend to come from this region.
The Southern Rhone is flatter and tends to produce more everyday drinking wines.
Happily, the winery of Hubert & Fils is located near the prime vineyards of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation so this Côtes du Rhône Rouge is a step up from your run of the mill red wine.
