If You Like Pinot Grigio…

Sometimes all we need is a crisp, dry white and Pinot Grigio does the trick nicely. But what if you want even more Italian elegance for your buck? The little known grape Garganega could be your answer, as it makes some great value, zippy Italian whites. There’s a good chance you haven’t heard of the Garganega grape because you don’t see it too often on wine labels. We've included three of our favourite Garganega wines here: The Soave Superiore Classico Montegrande is a fine example of what Garganega can produce with premium growing conditions and skilled winemaking. The Garganega Antiche Terre has all the flavour of a good Soave, and the Gambellara Classico is made by a small wine co-operative and has been described by the Sunday Times as ‘Soave on steroids’. A tempting prospect indeed.

Fridges across the country certainly aren’t short of a bottle or two of Pinot Grigio bottle and quite rightly so. But think about leaving that Pinot Grigio on the shelf for once and try Garganega, a wine that could take you off on a slightly different Italian wine adventure.

The Producer

The Cantina di Monteforte co-op is situated in the eastern part of the Soave region, with 1,200 hectares of vineyard in total, part in Soave Classico and part outside the Classico zone. The co-op has an unrivalled selection of the best vineyards in the area, with 60% on the hills, facing south and south east, giving wines that are riper and fuller than most others that are produced in Soave. The grapes for this single vineyard wine are grown in the “Montegrande” vineyard which is a hillside site facing south and south east, with superb exposure and the vines are on average 30 years old.

Gorgonzola stuffed Chicken Breast wrapped in Pancetta

Plump for a ripe, fruity white such as Soave to contrast with the salty tang that the pancetta and cheese bring to the dish. Our Soave Superiore Classico will definitely stand up to the challenge. Full recipe

The Producer

Italian wine co-operatives are brilliant at producing top-notch, great value wines. The Cantina di Gambellara was founded in 1947 and has nearly 300 members who farm 600 hectares in this small denomination on the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona only a few miles east of Soave. Last year, this cantina merged with the Cantina dei Colli Vicentini where Alberto Marchisio is now responsible for winemaking.

Wow! What a beautiful fragrant wine, a hint of Muscat without the associated over sweetness of that grape, and a sharp freshness that could only be Italian Richard

I felt compelled to check where I bought it from and then to tell anyone who cares to read this that it's very, very quaffable Alan
