Made from 100% Montepulciano grapes at a quality-minded co-operative in Abruzzo, this has lots of dark berry fruit and spice leading to smooth flavours of fresh black cherry and cocoa, complete with lovely soft tannins. The Wine Gang thought it was: 'Deliciously vibrant and refreshing Montepulciano with a lip-smacking cherry tartness, juicy dark plum and ripe tomato, and a hint of black olive.' Great with pizza or pasta.

'There is a seriously impressive depth of fruit in this sun-kissed, bold, authentic wine and it will enchant your palate with its deep, black fruit flavours.'

The Producer

Il Faggio is made by Alana McGettigan at one of the region's best co-operatives in the northern part of the Abruzzi. The aim is to capture in the bottle the power and intensity of the grape, together with a lift and freshness which is seldom found in wines from this area. The name Il Faggio derives from the fabulous beech trees which proliferate in this area, especially in the Abruzzo national park.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"The great red grape of Abruzzo, in this rendition both creamy and strawberry ripe on the nose, but also with darker black fruit notes and a hint of tobacco spice. This has delicious creaminess on the palate (It surely must see a little oak?) a touch of mint that is cool and fresh, but again it is that ripe black cherry, slicked with a soft brush of vanilla, that leads on to a very delicious finish. Another great all-rounder at a very good price."

The Region

Tourists often overlook this unspoilt region in central Italy in favour of the racier Mediterranean coast but the Abruzzo is known as the greenest region in Europe, with over a third of the land given over to national parks and reserves. The grapes for this wine were grown on the hills and flatter vineyards surrounding the town of San Salvo in Abruzzo in central-eastern Italy

Great wine

Lovely wine that makes you look forward to the next bottle. It is slightly spicy yet rounded and has a lovely lingering aftertaste.

Most enjoyable

Reading the blurb on the label, I steeled myself for a bruiser of a wine. How wrong could I be.
Very enjoyable wine with many subtleties on the palate. I'm glad I've got another bottle!

Lovely smooth easy drinking

An exceptionally easy drinking red - no need to leave it to breathe, although it helps even more. Blackberry notes with no heavy tannins. Obviously good with pasta, but also lovely to drink on its own. I normally err towards big reds, but was very happy with this and didn't miss the chunkiness at all.

one of the best montepulciano

This is an exceptional montepulciano. Unlike a lot it doesn't have chalky finished. It is delightfully fruity and great value - I'm about to order more

Another refreshing change

Rude Wines have developed a wonderful knack of introducing me to wines I haven't previously tried. For me Italy is about chianti and merlot but this wine is a refreshing change. Perfect for late summer evenings.

Salami Pizza

The smoky, spiced meat needs a wine with lots of soft fruit while the tomato sauce requires a good dollop of acidity. Italian reds made from Montepulciano or Sangiovese are a great placed to start.
