Made from 100% Montepulciano grapes at a quality-minded co-operative in Abruzzo, this has lots of dark berry fruit and spice leading to smooth flavours of fresh black cherry and cocoa, complete with lovely soft tannins. The Wine Gang thought it was: 'Deliciously vibrant and refreshing Montepulciano with a lip-smacking cherry tartness, juicy dark plum and ripe tomato, and a hint of black olive.' Great with pizza or pasta.

Buy this if...you're looking for a rich, easy-drinking, red.

'There is a seriously impressive depth of fruit in this sun-kissed, bold, authentic wine and it will enchant your palate with its deep, black fruit flavours.' Matthew Jukes, The Mail on Saturday, 12th November 2016

The Producer

Il Faggio is made by Alana McGettigan at one of the region's best co-operatives in the northern part of the Abruzzi. The aim is to capture in the bottle the power and intensity of the grape, together with a lift and freshness which is seldom found in wines from this area. The name Il Faggio derives from the fabulous beech trees which proliferate in this area, especially in the Abruzzo national park.

The Winemaker

Only the very best quality grapes were chosen for this blend from hand-harvested fruit. After the grapes were crushed they were pumped to stainless steel tanks designed specifically for fermenting red wine. After fermentation the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks to settle before bottling

The Region

The grapes for this wine were grown on the hills and flatter vineyards surrounding the town of San Salvo in Abruzzo in central-eastern Italy

Excellent wine with or without food

Deep red colour, slightly medicinal nose, but with soft fruit undertones.

Very fruity first taste with not unpleasant tannin on the palate. Short aftertaste making you want to slurp more and more. Excellent wine for the money, to drink with or without food.

A consistent pleaser at very reasonable price.

I've always liked Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, but I find Il Faggio particularly pleasing. It is very drinkable and the price is so reasonable. After I'd discovered it, I noticed a very warm review in the Daily Telegraph!

Il Faggio

"Another staple Italian red and real crowd pleaser, Il Faggio, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a perfect companion for grilled red meats. Soft, smooth and full bodied with nuances of chocolate, the ripe blackberry and brambly fruit has delicious depth with a streak of freshness and lovely aromatics to keep you coming back for more." Great Italian red

This is a dense ( in a good way) red which tastes better the longer the bottle is open. It is smooth but interesting too. Tates more expensive than it is

Just Right

Beautiful colour, superb in fact. Full bodied and nicely rounded. Compared to other Italian wines I have had tried it is quite dry, just how I like it.

Beef Burgers

There's nothing better than a good old beef burger served with a glass of bright, juicy red wine - head for supple, easy-drinking styles such as New World Cabernets and Merlots or bright, fruity Italian or Spanish reds.

Tartiflette

The rich combination of potato, cheese, bacon and garlic could stop anyone in their tracks so pick ripe reds with good acidity or structured whites which will both cut through the delicious stodge!

Salami Pizza

The tomato sauce on the pizza needs a light-ish red, while the smoky, spiced meat needs a wine with lots of soft fruit.
