Fans of Syrah (or Shiraz) red wines will find plenty to shout about with those from France's Rhône Valley. It's where the grape variety comes from originally, and the special climate and geography there make some of the very best examples found anywhere.

Vines averaging 25 years old, the winemaking skills of top producer Paul Jaboulet, and you have a delicious Syrah wine at a great price.

Bright, juicy red berry fruit with a touch of spice and you'll instantly see why the area's so highly regarded. A wine rack essential, ready for anything you put against it.

'Here the Jaboulet family take advantage of the Vin de France's more relaxed view on appellations to create great value red wine.'

The Producer

A historical Rhône estate since 1834 when Antoine Jaboulet began buying and farming the land around the town of Tain l’Hermitage, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has grown into one of the best known and most admired names in the Rhône Valley, synonymous with a broad range of top quality Rhône Cru and benchmark generic appellations. Six generations of the Jaboulet family carried on this family tradition, purchasing some of what would become the most prized vineyard locations in the region. Following nearly two centuries of family ownership, Maison Paul Jaboulet was bought in 2006 by the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"The 'Vin de France' appellation allows the blending of grapes from different regions that would not normally be allowed in France, and it has produced some very interesting wines including this Syrah that mixed Rhône Valley and Languedoc fruit. There's a nicely dry, dusty character on the nose of blue-black fruit like blueberries and blackberries. In the mouth the fruit is very pure, sweet-edged, but savoury too: there's a firmness to the tannins giving some liquorice grip, in a wine that will definitely appeal to lovers of classic Rhône Syrah rather than New World Shiraz."

The Region

Jaboulet's jewel has to be the magnificent vineyards of the Hermitage hill but they now own vineyard locations the length and breadth of the Rhône valley. More recent acquisitions in the Southern Rhone valley, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône, have earned Jaboulet another raft of great reviews.
